All My Life
About
After a slew of comedic style videos, the first single from Foo Fighters fourth album ‘One By One’ saw the band desire a return to a simple performance video, showcasing their intensity as a live band ahead of an upcoming tour to promote the album.
The setting for the ‘All My Life’ video was the Forum in Inglewood, California however only the opening establishing shots were filmed there. Primary filming instead took place at what was then known as Centennial Garden in Bakersfield, a two-hour drive north of Inglewood. The venue has since gone through several name changes and as of 2025 is known as the Dignity Health Arena.
Other than some shots of the band walking to the stage from the dressing rooms before the vocal starts the video is entirely a classic mimed live performance, with slow-motion action shots and various set changes behind the band mimicking an entire live show compressed into one song.
In the video Dave is using a vintage Ampeg Dan Armstrong Lucite Guitar, a model he would use frequently whilst touring for the album throughout 2002 and 2003.
The metal grates on the stage were not added for visual effect in the video; they were an original part of the stage at the venue at the time.
Raymond Pettibon, a well-known artist in the punk rock scene of the 1970s and 1980s, was commissions to create artwork for the entire run of media releases for the One By One release era, including the album itself, and his artwork can be seen on the screens behind the video throughout.
Strobing effects were used during the video and due to strict broadcasting rules in the United Kingdom which only allowed limited use of the effect an alternative edit of the video was created for that market, entitled simply “UK Version – Less Strobes”.
The twist at the end of the video was to reveal that the band had been playing to an empty arena, a message to fans that even without an audience they would be putting on an energetic performance.
