“Personally, I thought it would be a good idea to now tell the story of the last 16 years, so it would make more sense to watch us make a record in a garage” explained Dave Grohl when explaining the reason for Foo Fighters first full-length documentary video just prior to it's release in 2011. That garage was the one at his Los Angeles home, where the band had decided to record their seventh studio album.

This documentary, directed by James Moll was therefore conceived and produced to do just that. The film doesn't quite begin at the start, skipping over Dave's earliest bands and , electing instead to fill the first chapter with the Nirvana timeline, and it's sad conclusion. The segment mixes brand new interviews staged by Moll at Studio 606 with Dave and Pat alongside archive footage of Nirvana, setting the general tone and style for the rest of the film.

Chapter 2 explores Dave's next musical chapter, his decision on what do next, and the eventual formation of Foo Fighters. The first album recording process is covered, as well as the hiring of first band members Pat Smear, and William Goldsmith and Nate Mendel.

The documentary continues this chronological path through the history of the band, culminating in their two headline shows at Wembley Stadium in 2008. We then arrive at the recording of Wasting Light at which point the film changes style, going into a behind the scenes play-by-play documenting the process from top to bottom with producer Butch Vig.

The film concludes with video from their show at The Roxy in February 2011 which saw the band play the full album start to finish, and looking forward to the following years of the band.
