About
Some albums are made because a band has something to say. But Here We Are was made because silence was no longer an option.
In the space of just a few months, Foo Fighters lost two of the most important people in Dave Grohl's life: Drummer and twin flame Taylor Hawkins, and Grohl's mother, Virginia. The future of the band, once solid and dependable, was suddenly uncertain. Coming together to celebrate friendship and survival through music is what Foo Fighters have always been about, but this was different - they now found themselves confronting grief on a bigger, heavier scale.
Retreating to the sanctuary of Studio 606 with producer Greg Kurstin, the band began composing out of necessity. For perhaps the first time in Foo Fighters history, the lyrics came first. Dave Grohl once again took up the drum stool himself, channelling complicated and inexpressible pain into every performance.
The result, But Here We Are - a title grabbed from a conversation in the hours after Hawkins’ death - became a document of love and loss. Across ten songs, the band was tossed back and forth between every stage of grief. From the opening shock of 'Rescued' to the devastating closing moments of 'Rest', the album spoke of the messy and fragile part of healing in a world when the people who helped define it are no longer there. But it is also a story of survival, as is the thread stretching the length of the band’s entire history. Amongst pain, there is hope, and a belief that music can connect people and carry them through the darkest moments. In creating art from their suffering, the band found the inner resources to keep going forward.
The album was released on June 2, 2023. Dedicated to both Taylor Hawkins and Virginia Grohl, But Here We Are was widely acclaimed as one of the strongest, most important, and deeply resonant albums of the band's career.
