Hail Satin

The Dee Gees were born from a band who doesn't take themselves too seriously. Then again, some of Foo Fighters' best ideas have.

Fresh from completing Medicine at Midnight, attention turned to a simple cover song request for a BBC Radio session. The band’s rendition of ‘You Should Be Dancing’ surprised some, due to it being played straight while losing none of its camp energy. Dave Grohl comfortably slipped into a falsetto he claimed was one of the easiest vocal performances he’d done. So there was little hesitation to keep the momentum going and do a few more while they were at it.

Recording at Studio 606 with producer Greg Kurstin, Foo Fighters embraced their disco alter ego, the Dee Gees (DG, get it?), tackling favourites including 'Night Fever', 'Tragedy', 'More Than a Woman' and Andy Gibb's 'Shadow Dancing' (the latter led by Taylor Hawkins giving his smoothest Andy take). The performances were fun and affectionate. Side A contained five Bee Gees disco classics draped in the finest sonic satin, while Side B shifted focus back to Medicine at Midnight with live in-studio performance of five album tracks.

The album was unveiled as an exclusive Record Store Day release on July 17, 2021. Hail Satin showed a band confident and secure enough to detour from what was expected of them, and lean harder into the playful spirit they’d always embodied, in new and surprising ways.
